12 Players signed on for Round #2 of the group + knockout match format that saw the top 2 players from each group progress to a winners KO and losers playing a consolation KO phase too, all earning ranking points for the league which comprises the best 4 of 5 events over the next few months.
In Group 1, Mark Wynn-Smith, winner of the Losers KO last time, bossed it this time and finished top with Cameron Meakin qualifying 2nd. In Group 2. Despite a wobbly start, Steve Groves triumphed with Russ Tolley scraping through too and in Group 3, Ben Jackson finished equal on points with Paul Prince but qualified top as he had beaten Paul in their head-to-head.
In the losers KO, Geoff ‘Dizzy’ Nokes, Round #1 Winner, saw off Jim Mildner, in the first quarter-final, to meet Ed in the first semi courtesy of a bye. In the other quarter-final, Matt Anthony beat Billy Cowsill to setup a 2nd semi-final with Alvin Holland.
In the first semi, Ed pulled some great darts together to brush past Geoff 2-0. It was a similar story in the 2nd semi, with Matt taking Alvin out 2-0 too to setup a final with Ed.
The final was best of 5 but Matt only needed 3 legs to beat Ed and win the losers KO. Consolation for narrowly missing out on qualifying out of his group.
In the Main KO, Mark Wynn-Smith and Cameron Meakin qualified out of the quarters with byes. In the first match, Ben and Russ had a close match with Russ scraping it 2-1 to setup his semi with Mark. In the 2nd quarter Paul had darts for the first leg but couldn’t see it out and lost 2-0 setting Steve up for a 2nd semi vs Cameron.
In the first semi, player of the night, Mark edged Russ in a tight encounter to reach the final and in the 2nd semi, Cam felt the wrath of a 73 average from Steve to lose 2-0.
After a great run and definitely the most-improved player since the last league match, Mark tried but couldn’t compete with Steve in the final and Steve ran out a clear 3-0 winner.
Steve’s win pushed him to top of the rankings with 3 rounds to play.
