A bumper 20 Players signed on for a very hot Round #3 of the group + knockout match format that saw the top 3 players from each group of 5 progress to a winners KO and losers playing a consolation KO phase. All earning league ranking points which comprises the best 4 of 5 events over the next few months.
The heat played a part in the night creating problems for some players but despite some poor darts by normal standards we did see some impressive darts too, particularly from the youngsters in the field.
In Group 1, Paul Prince remained unbeaten taking Geoff Nokes and Gaz Troth through with him. In Group 2, Matt Anthony finished top with a great performance from Jasper Brunn to qualify second and an out of sorts Steve Groves scraping home in 3rd. In Group 3, Dylan Rowe finished first, followed by Billy Cowsill and another great performance from Teddy Glaze to take the third spot. In Group 4, Ed McManus regained some form to qualify top, taking Cameron Meakin and Ben Jackson through too.
In the Losers KO, Steve Brunn and Alvin Holland faced off in the first quarter-final with Brunn the victor 2-1 in a tight game. In the 2nd quarter, Jason Evans knocked out Dan Prince 2-0 to setup the first semi-final with Steve. Former Losers KO winner Mark-Wynn-Smith got a bye and faced Jim Mildner who beat Colin McKInley 2-0 in the final quater final.
In the first semi-final, Jason knocked out Steve 2-1 and it was similar scoreline in the 2nd semi, with Mark just edging out Jim 2-1 to make his second final.
In the best of 5 final, Jason took the first leg and didn’t let up, taking next two and the match 3-0 to win.
In the Main KO, with 3 qualifiers from each group it meant a Round of 16 first for the 3rd placed group qualifiers. In the first match, a battle of the youngest talent, Jasper and Teddy played out a close game but Teddy took the spoils 2-0 to setup a quarter final against Paul Prince. In Game 2, Cam Meakin was undone by a simmering Gaz Troth 2-0. In Game 3, Ben Jackson took out Geoff Nokes 2-0 and in the final round-of-16 match, Steve Groves was back to his best and took out Billy Cowsill 2-0.
In the first quarter-final, Teddy piled the pressure on Paul taking leg1 but Paul scraped home with a couple of strong legs to take it 2-1. In the second match, Dylan was beaten 2-0 by Gaz Troth to setup the first semi-final.
In the 3rd quarter-final Matt Anthony eased past Ben 2-0 to setup a second semi-final with Steve Groves who was rampant now taking out Ed 2-0
The first semi-final was a repeat of their group game where Paul was the victor. He had darts to do him again but Gaz dug out a great win 2-1 to make the final. In the 2nd semi, Matt faced a Steve on a charge taking it 2-0 with a 68 average.
In the final, Steve dispatched Gaz 3-0. After a ropey group where he almost didn’t qualify, he smashed the KO phasse to run out the overall winner!
